integrated PhD
This is a Research-Based Doctorate Program. Students select a topic from the undergraduate programs and conduct in-depth research on their chosen topic. Students will complete their research and studies from home, with flexibility and autonomy.
The University of Holistic Theology and Alternative Science offers two Integrated PhDs, one in theological studies, spirituality, church government, and ministerial studies. and one in on metaphysical studies, holistic theological studies, and holistic herbal and natural healing. Both are Self-Paced and the flexibility depends on individual progress.
Options: Choose from 6 months, 1 year, or 2 years to complete your program that combine one year of taught course work (equivalent to a MTh or MLitt) with1 year of independent doctoral research working with an expert supervisor in Divinity and/or Art.
Who is This For?
The integrated PhD is a great option for students who could benefit from additional preparation for a PhD program while enjoying continuity of study and a streamlined transition from master’s level work to a PhD. For example, students would find this option helpful if their current educational experience would not qualify them for admission to the PhD program, or perhaps they could benefit from developing particular skills, such as facilities with additional languages for their doctoral research. Candidates with either a relevant undergraduate degree or a first postgraduate degree (such as an M.Div.) are welcome to apply.
This degree may also be of benefit to students who come from an academic context where taught coursework is a standard part of the PhD program.
How does it work?
The integrated PhD programmer is split into two stages. In stage one, the first year of the degree, the student will take 180 credits of coursework, usually four 30-credit courses and a 60-credit dissertation. Stage two of the degree runs between years 2-4 and functions like a traditional British PhD programmer, leading to a 100,000-word thesis. The courses you select will be shaped by your research trajectory so that you are well prepared for the doctoral phase of the programmer.
Programs
For the Integrated PhD in Divinity, you can focus on any of the following specialist subject areas:
- Systematic Theology
- Theological Ethics
- Church History
- Historical Theology
- Practical Theology
- Old Testament
- Hebrew Bible
- New Testament
- Philosophical Theology
In order to progress from stage one to stage two of the program, the student must meet the following criteria:
- Attain an average of 16/22 (B) on their coursework
- Attain 17 (B+) on their dissertation
- Pass a Research Proposal Revision Exercise
- Have two letters of recommendation
Students who meet these criteria will automatically progress on the PhD program. If a student does not meet this higher threshold for progression to stage two of the integrated PhD but does pass the coursework and dissertation at a standard master’s level, then they will be able to exit at the end of the first year with a MTh or MLitt.

Phd Program Full-Time Duration
Full-time 36 months; part-time 60 months. We offer research students the option of commencing study in January or September. We also now offer an Extended PhD (full-time 12 months; part-time 16 months). Please see full details below.
The PhD may be conducted, full-time or part-time, by distance learning, which carries no residency requirement.
The PhD at the UHTAS is a research degree. The student’s own research proposal defines research degrees, on which the student will write a thesis. Research students read on their own research topic and work closely with their supervisors to define their research and write a thesis. They also attend regular research seminars and are provided with opportunities to attend conferences and for some postgraduates, there are opportunities to gain undergraduate teaching experience.
To be accepted into the PhD program, an applicant must secure a research supervisor. Applicants should address the most suitable member of the department describing their intended project to see whether supervision can be provided.
Entry Requirements
Normally, the minimum entrance requirement for admission to the PhD is a 2:1 (B-average) degree in an appropriate field, or equivalent. You should hold a Master’s in the chosen area of study as well.
Residency
A PhD may be conducted by distance learning. Distance learning involves the same level of supervision as residential study, and supervisors may stipulate that some meetings be in person.
International students may undertake the part-time PhD by Distance Learning only. This normally entails 12 months of supervised research.
How to Apply
The application process for the Integrated PhD is the same as for a standard PhD. Therefore, the student must apply with a coherent and feasible research proposal. You should apply for the Doctor of Philosophy program in either Divinity or Art History and indicate clearly on your Statement and Research Proposal that you wish to be considered for the Integrated PhD pathway.
Admission decisions will bear in mind that the applicants will have additional preparation, research, and revision of the research proposal during the first year of the program. It is advisable to contact a potential research supervisor before applying to discuss your research ideas and your application to the program.
